What makes this tour different, you ask? People! This tour is geared towards parents, grand-parents and their children. Every year trains become more and more a thing of yesterday, which is why it is ever so important to expose the new generations to the majesty of trains!
For this reason, we’ve done everything in our power reduce the cost of a children’s ticket to as low as we can get it!
Itinerary: Day 1
Fly into Denver (or drive if you are nearby) and take the transfer van over to our hotel. Arrive if you can, by late afternoon as our welcoming dinner will be this evening, when all the questions get answered and we begin to make new friends. Doubletree Hotel
After breakfast we begin our first adventure with visits just west of Denver where we will find many places of interest, (trains you can ride on and a few that you can simply see and take pictures of), but old trains nevertheless. For the children there is a special stop, Tiny Town, where the children get to ride the trains and play among 100 child sized buildings. The adults can watch and take pictures, of course. There is a dinosaur museum in town and a great place for lunch. Our hotel is the LaQuinta.
For train buffs the name, Georgetown Loop, is important because of the antique train and then we are off to Breckinridge which has an antique train and a playground. We continue onto Leadville for the night and stay at an historic hotel, the Delaware.
We begin the day with a journey up the mountain on the Leadville Train. It is a good time for your camera, then a stop and back down the hill. We have a little longer ride today as we head for Pike's Peak, but you are rewarded with a completely different train ride up the famous mountain. We spend the evening exploring the little town of Manitou Springs, the site of our hotel.
It's off to Cripple Creek, a very unique town because it has 975 residents and 9 gambling casinos.
It also has a narrow gauge train which, with open cars and an old steam engine which will take us on a 45 minute ride through the countryside which they describe as a beautiful and fascinating experience, filled with a rich history that only a dynamic gold town could produce. Our hotel is the Holiday Inn in Cahygh City.
The Royal Gorge Railroad takes us on a unique ride up a narrow canyon on a narrow river, a spectacular train ride through the Colorado Rockies, in comfort and style. Then down the road a very few miles, to the top of the gorge, where we can look down on that same river, 956 feet below us. The day continues with a drive to Alamosa, where we will find *****old train and nearby playground on the Rio Grande River with a nice playground. Holiday Inn Express.
The day begins with a bus ride west, heading for Durango and a great steam train, as well as the Train Museum which we will visit.
then it's up the mountain to Silverton, time there for lunch and a visit around the town and then another great ride, this time down the hill. Strater Hotel.
Then we will Drive to Chama, New Mexico, for a great day long train ride through the mountains and the wilderness. And this is really wilderness where there will be more deer/moose than humans, no houses, no roads, no people, just incredible wilderness. And lunch? Bring your appetite because it is spectacular. Holiday inn, Alamosa.
Finally, we will Drive to Denver to see the Golden Railroad Museum (which has 15 acres of train locomotives). Then back to our hotel and our celebration dinner. Hotel: Doubletree
After breakfast, it's time to go home. We'll part ways until next time!
